Development Timeline

This is a VERY iffy list of things that need to be done and the order in which they should get done.  One thing you should notice is I intend to have periodic releases.  What does this mean?  Since this is a pet project of mine, I do not anticipate when I may decide it is finished, and what would the fun be of keeping it under lock and key until I decide it is done?  It is better for my programming experience if I develop an active project (even if only used by one person).  In addition, I may receive valuable feedback as to the direction the game could go, if some aspects prove particularly fun or horrible.

Basic Goals – During this phase, large changes may occur in appearance, function, and user experience.  Expect many items to add user commands and basic game play elements which can be enhanced later.  For example, movement can be refined to include not moving, moving quickly, jumping, flying, etc.

  1. Skeleton GUI interface – done
  2. Skeleton character creation, user interaction and display – done
  3. Skeleton entities and senses – done
  4. Basic combat engine – done
  5. Skeleton items and item types – partially done
  6. Create a “Winning Goal” and basic obstacles for player to overcome
  7. Prototype level 1
  8. Release basic game (WARNING, WILL BE VERY BASIC)

Intermediate Goals – During this phase, commands may be added or removed to enhance game play experience, elements of the GUI may be modified, but the fluctuation of the basic game appearance should be less, the focus should be on more and better game play.  Consider multiple releases during this period.

  1. Add magic system
  2. Add lighting, entity vision and memory
  3. Flesh out character creation
  4. Add wider range of item types
  5. Improve the feel of the world by allowing more real interaction with elements inside it.
  6. Begin to develop a story telling atmosphere
  7. Random level generation
  8. Improve on Goals / Obstacles and the game play experience

Advanced Goals – ?
