VMWare Server 2

August 23rd, 2009 No comments

So, looking try a VMWare product for free? Look no further than this link to get started. A couple words of caution about installing on a Linux box. I installed this on OpenSUSE 11.1, and I ran into two key issues which I didn’t find much documentation on. So first, please, unless you know more than I do, do NOT install java after installing this product. Apparently, although it isn’t that apparent at all, the web interface uses Java (1.5 at that) and a new JRE install via RPM broke everything all to hell. So DON’T do it. The other is, it is possible you may screw up your VMWare permissions and be unable to start/stop your boxes. In that case, I have found chown’ing the Virtual Machines directory to your VMWare admin account solves the problem nicely. Also, getting a system hang with jexec on boot? Just move/delete the init.d script for jexec, and you should be good to go. Happy VM’ing.
